Hello Everybody,

Since being diagnosed with RA in November last year I am trying to deal and manage it. But It's getting difficult. By the way I wanted to thank all the people who help me see life a bit positive last time I was in the forum.

I am on Meth x8 per week, Prednisolone x2 per day and Tramadol every hour since the last 3 weeks.

I'm a lot of pain and it's affecting my work and even things I want to do. I do take things easy but I've noticed when I go food shopping after 30 mins I am exhausted(my fiance always accompany me). My heart beat raised like I am having a a panic attack. I know it's early days yet but can anyone help by telling how to manage that unbearable pain. Specially at night my right side of my body ache a lots sometimes I cry I mean most of the time. My RA is worst in my right ankle, right hip, right shoulder, right hand and since last week all along my leg. My right side is getting heavy. I am getting really tired easily and I am a bit fed up with it.

I still do my blood test every 2 weeks, and the inflammation is a bit high.

It's just that the pain is getting down. I like going to the gym I am scared I get worst after. Even today I sat in the sun for less than 15 mins I feel my body was burning a lot. My ankle and hand always swollen. Getting up in the morning is the worst thing sometimes I feel force by the pain to stay in bed. After cooking today I was very tired and had to rest . Sometimes I get so tired, it gives me a headache. I feel like RA is taking my life over and I find it difficult to manage it.. like RA is mananging me not the way around.

My next appointment is in July but I am trying to get a appointment asap. It's so difficult to get an emergency appointment even with my GP.

I feel like my right side of my body is dead..

All these pain is affecting my work, my daily life and myself. I am taking things easy and most of the people around me are helping me specially my finace.

I am worried about my big day in July also. I'm getting married in July.

Any suggestion, any tips are welcome and thank you in advance for all your help.

Hi

I'm sorry that you are in so much pain. Ring your GP and get an appointment to sort out pain relief. I have amtriptyline 25mg at night which is really good for the pain. It does make you a bit sleepy to start with but if you take it around 7pm it's easier to get up and after 2 weeks you get more used to it. There are lots of pain relief out there, morphine, codeine etc which are all very good, your GP will advise you.

Also you could try phorpain gel and wheat bags heated up i find good.

Try and pace yourself and not over do things and rest when you can.

I hope you are feeling relief soon.

I know it's hard to deal with the pain at first but you definitely need to try to get to see your rheumatologist before your next appointment for a review of your treatment. All of us are different and have had to find our drug regimes by trial and error but you should be able to get some help with pain relief while you are trying to find the drugs that work for you. If you can't get in touch with your rheumatology team, ask your GP for their secretary's name. I've had to do that before. I felt a bit daft at the time but it was well worth it to get an appointment. I actually got a depomedrone general steroid injection that helped with the pain within a couple of days. I don't think you can take oral seroids with this but this is why you must see your rheumy.

If you are getting breathless, please go to your GP away and tell them. It could be the fatigue and struggling to get things done but some of us start to get high blood pressure which is common with RA. Don't suffer in silence. Take care.

Hello,

Put the kettle on, make a brew and take a deep breath! Phew ...

It sounds as though things are running away with you and out of control.

1. Stop doing too much, the RA is not controlled and your body is yelling at you to slow down!
2. Pain relief, Tramadol on it's own is inadequate for this type of pain. You need something to take throughout the day and something stronger at bedtime so you get much needed rest. Pain relief and amtriptyline (which works differently) may be useful at this stage. Your GP can arrange this easily.
3. How high is the inflammation level? Is it being monitored properly? If it's inordinately high someone should be shouting by now!! can you speak to a rheumatology nurse?
4. Don't go to the gym when RA is uncontrolled. You will put unnecessary stress on your joints which could lead to damage. Gentle stretching to keep joints mobile is in order. Never exercise when joints are inflamed or RA active.
5. You are on high dose Methotrexate which is known to cause photosensivity. Avoid direct sunlight and use high factor sun cream to avoid possible burning and scarring.
6 Try to keep cooking down to a few nights a week by preparing and freezing meals in advance which can then be whizzed in the oven as required.
7. It certainly sounds as though the current meds aren't working for you and an early review is needed. Please press for an urgent appointment with rheumatology.

Above all you've a big day coming up so do get the help now rather than later, July is only round the corner. Don't let the RA grind you down. Try and stay positive there are lots of meds out there and something will be right for you ThumpUp

Take care,

Lyn x

Hi,
Also diagnosed in November and still trying to get to grips with the pacing yourself thing. Over did it last week and had to spend yesterday doing absolutely nothing, couldn't wake up, couldn't move, couldn't sleep, couldn't do anything, frustrated and teary. Feeling a bit more mobile today but trying not to do anything which isn't absolutely necessary. I've found the best oxymoron in the world, you have to work really hard at doing nothing! Rest is the only thing, ring in sick, get your GP to sign you off for at least a couple of weeks and recover your strength, if you keep on pushing it you'll end up in bed for weeks. I suspect I will never learn this pacing yourself thing but if I don't I know I'll suffer the consequences. Sometimes its worth it, sometimes not, its a case of prioritising. Lyn's advice is always really sound, mine a bit haphazard being new to this game as well but just wanted to let you know that you're not alone in all this! Oh, and chocolate biscuits with the brew will also help, full of iron!

*hugs gently*

No miracles to offer unfortunately - only best wishes that things sort themselves out for you asap!

Just one suggestion - can you cheat and order your food shopping via the net instead? Make someone else do the lifting for you!Cool

I can only agree with all the advice you have here- do yohave a rheummy nurse you can ring?

Have you tried a memory foam matress? I know they are pricey-I have a memory foam layer over my ordinary matress.

Use extra pillows to put between your knees at night and to support the really painful bits. Cocoon yourself with other pillows to protect your painful bits.

Have you been splints to support your hands?

Have you seen an occupational therapist?

Hot water bottles and wheat bags really help me.
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Thank you for all your support and help.

still feeling the same. I've been to my GP today and he has not been very helpful. Just increase my prednisolone from 2 to 6 tablets a day. I need to a blood test tomorrow and go back to my GP on tuesday. He told me he's gonna see a few times then if i get worst or still the same then he is gonna write to the doc in hospital to check me.

I am exhausted with pain. Can't sleep because of the pain. I am using the water bottle at night and lots of pillows.

A massive thank you to all of you.

Good news that you ve seen your GP, sorry though he was not very understanding. When I was in your position and waiting for the right medication they would up my dose of prednisolone, I m sure you will feel a lot better very soon.

Keep us posted on how you doing.

Hi, you sound as if you have taken enough of this!! you have had some excellent advice, I do think gps tend to err on the side of caution when it comes to RA, one of my gps refused me any pain meds as "she would get struck off if anything happened, and she didnt get the say so of the consultant" I think its wise to do as the gp says, then if it doesnt work, go back and tell them, enough is enough, if you feel you cant deal with this, then you need to get me an earlier appointment. I hope you do get some help, and meds that work fror you, sending hugs and best wishes. Oh, and tell them of you wedding in July, and say "how would you like to be in pain on the most important day of your life?"Sad

Hi Sharon,

I am so very sorry to hear about the rough time you are having with your RA at the moment. You are obviously having a very nasty flare.

I have never found my GP much help. She just has not got the knowledge a rheum. dept. has. When I am in trouble I phone the rheum. nurse, who really understands. She gives me a lot of advice, and books me up with a doctor, if change of medication is needed.

If your rheum. apt. has a specialist nurse, try to get to know her. She can be of great help and a confidante for the future.

I do wish you better soon.

Poor you! it sounds really bad at the moment. I remember not sleeping but being exhausted at the same time and not really knowing what was happening to me. My husband used to come home from night shift and i'd be crying. I hope you get an appointment quickly. My RA is under control. I never thought i'd feel "normal" again. It will get better. Take care and take time out to rest. It's hard to listen to your body, i thought that was something only old people did. I was 37 when i was diagnosed. Hope you soon start to feel better soon, dawnybee

Hi - I see you have already been given good advice from others - just to say I was diagnosed 2years ago, and everything you are experiencing now is familiar - hang in there, you must listen to your body it is telling you to slow down and rest. I have now got voluntary redundancy but have been a secretary fulltime and oh boy did I struggle for the first months after diagnosis, and still do some days - but you learn to approach tasks differently learning to pick things up, carry things etc to take the pressure off your joints.

I had a workplace assessment by my OT - it made a difference - she is tremendous and has given me excellent advice on how to manage things like shopping, and household chores etc - I would strongly recommend you speak to you RA nurse about arranging for an appointment with an OT.

But just to say we have recently moved house and typical me couldn't wait for my husband to move some garden pots I decided to do it myself and boy did I pay for - but after some days of taking a back seat and advising him where I would like things put, the pain in my joints eased - so you see we all have to approach things from a different angle now, do somthing then take a rest learn to slow down - try to allow others take over those jobs like peeling veg etc (or buy ready chopped) let your partner carry the shopping ie lifting the bags out of the trolley into the boot of the car believe me you will get there no matter how hard it seems now - as you can see everyone is so kind and helpful they have given me sound advice in the past even a week ago when I needed it.

Take care and hang in there things will get better - Jane x

Hello, and so sorry you are having such a BAD time right now with pain, I can't really add much to all the good advice you have already from all these wonderful people on this forum as I,m fairly new to all this myself. So just to say we all understand, hang in there and look forward to better days, as others have said the constant pain wears you out so you need to keep it under control. Keep going back to your GP till you get what works for you. Take care and hope you feel better soon. ( Gentle hug) , Shenac.

hello

I am sorry to hear you are in pain, but all the advice you have been given s correct and i know wat it is like to have to pace yourself when you are used to doing everything in top gear, i still slip up and do too much and suffer even more, wh not ask to go to a pain clinic this may help yo understand the way to slow down to low gear, I know what you mean about pain and so does my huby as every time i turn i yell out with pain but i have found one of those A shape pillows help a lot and wheaty bags under you bad side helps as well, and you can get wheaty feet bags as well and they do work very well, I hope your big day goes well keep us up dated with how you are going slow down go to OT for the excersices as you say you like to do gym work and try and find some other hobby that keeps you sat down and your mind off the pain. good luck with all this

soft hugs and ThumpUp

Audrey.
